How to Minimize your Elderly Loved One’s Risk of Heart Disease

Talks about the heart don’t have to happen only in February. In fact, they have to be done all year round to ensure our heart is healthy. According to the American Heart Association, thousands of Americans die of this disease every day. Seniors, in particular, are at risk of this disease because of their current lifestyle. Fortunately, there are ways to help your senior loved ones reduce their risk. These include the following:

Ensure they are not Overly Stressed

Stress can cause a lot of bodily issues including heart disease. There are many ways your senior loved one can feel stressed. Stress can be physical or emotional. Depending on their physical capabilities, your loved one may be doing more works than their body can. Or they could be emotionally stressed because of a loss or their distance from their kids or close friends. Determine if your loved one has been stressed and discuss this to them to solve the issue. Ensure they Exercise Regularly

Exercise for seniors doesn’t have to be strenuous. In fact, they can stay physically active on a daily basis by just doing some household chores. The idea here is to ensure they don’t stay in bed or couch most of the day. A thirty-minute exercise every day can go a long way for their heart.

Prepare Heart-Healthy Foods for them

When it comes to heart health, ensure your loved one reduces their intake of  foods with high amounts of fat, cholesterol, sugar and sodium. Ensure they consume enough amounts of fruits and vegetables. Also, eating foods with omega-3 fatty acids can help improve their heart’s health.

Make Sure they Get Enough Zzzzs

A lack of sleep makes your loved one tired and raises their blood pressure level. In fact, it can increase their risk of obesity and diabetes. These issues can result in an increased risk of heart disease. Make sure your senior loved one maintains 7-9 hours of sleep every night.

Ensure they Take their Medications

In case your loved one is prescribed with heart medications, ensure they take them as instructed. Missing doses of these medications can increase their risk of heart failure. In case you cannot be there to assist them or give them reminders to take their medication, hire a caregiver to do the job.
